Vegan Vegetarianism
The single most important thing that you can do to help animals is to go vegan/vegetarian.
Here are some reasons to make this lifesaving, cruelty-free choice:
Every year in the U.S., the number of animals abused, exploited and cruelly slaughtered in factory farms and in the wild is staggering.
|
Raised For Slaughter:
- 10 billion chickens and a half billion turkeys
- 100 million pigs
- 35 million beef cattle
- 1.1 million veal calves 1.1 million
Abused And Exploited For Life:
- 300 million egg-laying chickens
- 9 million dairy Cows
Taken From The Wild And Cruelly Slaughtered:
- 100 million tons of fish
- More than 100 million wild animals through hunting

Factory Farms Are A Menace To People, Wildlife And The Environment
Large-scale "Confined Animal Feeding Operations" stink to high heaven and their proprietors are pushing legislation in different states to stop legal challenges by concerned neighbors. Governor Ed Rendell vetoed Pennsylvania's in December, 2003.
Studies show that large hog farms lower property values, that hog-farm cesspool gases are tied to nerve damage, and that factory farms are major air and water polluters.
Eating Meat Makes You Sick
New studies have linked meat consumption to Parkinson's disease, prostate cancer, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, dementia and breast cancer. More than 800 tons of meat was recalled for E.coli and several tons for salmonella and listeria. All of these diseases can cause death or permanent disability. Diseased meat recalls are so commonplace they don't get a lot of front-page play in the news.
In March 2003, North America was still "BSE-free." Now three cows have been identified with the horrific "Mad Cow" disease. The USDA's own expert panel predicted more cases in the US. The discovery of a new form of the disease has raised questions about whether some CJD deaths here may have been misdiagnosed, and there's a criminal probe into the USDA's claim that the US cow was a "downer" - slaughterhouse workers say otherwise.
SARS and bird flu both grew out of food animals (including cats) kept in tiny, inhumane cages and horrendous filthy conditions.
Meat Substitutes Are Everywhere
Even the “not health conscious”, commercial supermarkets have “beefed up” their vegetarian, meatless inventory of foods.
New Studies Show Vegan Diets (No Animal Products) Fight Illness
This is well established, but more evidence emerged this past year: Broccoli fights prostate cancer, as do onions, garlic; fruits and vegetables, especially fruits, lower cancer risk in general, and colonrectal in particular; tomatoes fight heart disease, as does fiber; soy cuts cholesterol and joins nuts, grains and leafy green vegetables in fighting problems associated with diabetes.
Plus, oatmeal fights obesity, and fruit & vegetable consumption builds strong bones.
So Veg-Out And Enjoy The Health Benefits!
